Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has announced three days’ workshop on Object-Based Classification of Remote Sensing data using eCognition software.
The workshop will be organized between 23-25 February 2018 at the Syed Babar Ali School of Sciences and Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS.
This workshop is designed to provide hands-on training to students, researchers, and professionals who are engaged in tasks that involve classification of satellite remote sensing imagery. Particularly, it will be helpful for professionals who are working on remote sensing projects related to agriculture, forestry, infrastructure, and construction.
What is Object Based Image Classification?
Briefly defining, Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) classification is a process that groups similar pixels into objects. These defined objects then classify image based on texture, context, and geometry.
The curriculum of the workshop is balanced with both theory and practice. Following are brief outlines of this workshop.
- Introduction to remote sensing with a special focus on UAV technology
- UAV demo: Demonstrating aerial imagery acquisition workflows
- Introduction to classification with focus on spectral signatures
- Discussion on classification types and use of appropriate technique according to requirements
- Hands-on lab session about the introduction and usage of eCognition
- The final hands-on session will explain the advanced object-based classification methods and their accuracy estimation in eCognition
This course requires basic theoretical knowledge of remote sensing and working knowledge about GIS software such as QGIS/ArcGIS or any other.
Students PKR. 10,000.
Professionals PKR. 15,000.

Finally, this workshop is an excellent opportunity for GIS-Remote Sensing professional to gain advanced state of the art knowledge and skill in image classification.
Organizing such workshops are important for producing qualified human resource or skill development of already existing human resource in Pakistani GIS industry.
It is hoped that LUMS effort will be followed by other universities as well. Ultimately, these sorts of trainings will contribute towards promotion of GIS and Remote Sensing in all business sectors in Pakistan.
